  Tough setup   January 4, 2009
Christopher A. Wilson
Well 4 hours into the setup process I finally got this thing up and running, and that was without draft n speeds, just g. First problem is that the software didn't immediately load up from the installation disk. I am running windows vista and have had for over a year, so I'm used to the compatibility issues, but would have thought that wouldn't be an issue now. I had to access the setup from my file directory and then I made the mistake of installing net-magic which didn't help either. In hindsight I should've spent more time looking at what was compatible with my wireless network adapter that's installed on my laptop (intel wireless chipset 4965agn) and started with the pdf manual for the router.....Anyway tips and tricks:

1.Bypass the net magic, it is a trial run service that will clog up your startup sequence and slow down your machine's speed. Connect your laptop directly to the router via an ethernet cable. Access the router's set up page (type in 192.168.0.1 in your url bar on your browser) and configure your wireless network from there. I copy and pasted the "key" into my network setup screen on windows, I had to manually set this up as windows did not find this connection for me automatically, windows issue and no fault of the router. Once I did this I eventually connected but only at "g" speeds. The pdf router manual helps you with this.
2. Ensure that the wireless security on your the wireless network adapter in your laptop is set to the type of security that your router is set to. For example I chose AES and TKIP settings on the WPA2 personnel security protocol on the router, my network adapter only allows draft n speeds using TKIP, so this created issues (g speeds versus n speeds) when I went to connect, so I had to match these to get the higher n connection speed. I found this on intel's website.
3. Could not connect on the 5 ghz frequency, my network adapter supports this but couldn't get both to work, so I'm just using the 2.4 ghz band for now with no issues.
4. Make sure that you have the latest driver's and firmware for both the router and your network adapter.
5. Draft n speeds drain the battery down quicker.

Overall I'm connected, the speeds are draft n and no dropouts or issues with having to reboot the router or modem as with my old equipment. I'd rate this higher if it hadn't taken me so long to get connected. No issues with my wired devices.

Arrived in timely manner. Set-up was troublesome. Took 3 calls for tech support. Updating the firmware solved the problem, and it is working fine now.

SecureSpot Parental Controls are excellent   November 25, 2008

I bought this router for one reason and one reason only - the SecureSpot parental controls. By putting 1st class surf control features in the router you eliminate the need to install and maintain controls on each individual computer. But the real reason I bought it was that my kid is getting an IPOD touch for XMAS and there is no way to implement parental controls on non-standard wi-fi capable device without doing it at the router. The IPOD Safari browser offers a pretty good surfing experience and I didn't want my kid finding or receiving the worst the Internet has to offer.

SecureSpot allows me to create a custom surfing profile for an unlimited number of devices (including PC's, Macs, IPODs, XBoxs, PlayStations, etc, etc). I can alter the parental controls from any Internet connection in the world.

Note: My router was shipped to me using version 1.10 of the Firmware, but you must have version 1.12 of the firmware (or later) to get the SecureSpot features. I downloaded the update to the router and installed it in about 10 minutes. In addition, you should know that there is a charge of $30 a year for SecureSpot - a bargain when you consider the lack of router based, parental-control-capable alternatives. For $30 a year you also get anti-virus (McAfee) and anti-spam software for up to 4 devices, but I don't plan on using this as I prefer AVG anti-virus. And these features require you to install a thin-client software on each computer.

The router also allows you to create blackout times for when a particular computer is to have no access to the Internet.

If you were to bring a new computer into my house and connect to my router, you would be directed to a registration page. From this page you can either enter my network as a Guest or Register the computer. If you enter as a guest you will be granted access to my network for 24hrs and you will receive a severely restricted "Guest" parental control profile. To register the device to my network you will have to get me involved as it requires the password. Once registered you are good to go, however I will give you a profile that is appropriate for who you are. All this is done without ever having to install anything on the device. The router keeps itself up to date on the latest sites automatically.

This router fills a genuine need at a reasonable cost. Way to go D-Link.

You have to choose between 2.5GHZ and 5 GHZ, not truly dual band. A good price point for a N band router.   November 20, 2008

D-Link routers usually offer more for less money than the competition.

However, with this router you will get the best performance if you can choose the 5GHz band with your 802.11N device. If you choose the 2.5GHz band - and you'll have to do this if you have even one device that is 802.11G or 2.5GHz N-band - it will give you just average performance.

The set up is pretty easy with the included CD, although it does take time to set up a new router now that most of us have so many devices using the router.

I was able to set up WPA encryption on my home network and connect 2 PCs, 1 Mac, 1 handheld PC, 2 wireless printers, 2 gaming consoles, and a VoIP service through this router. The internet connection kept dropping in the beginning for no reason at all but after power cycling the router a few times it has not given me too many problems.

I had to choose the 2.5GHz band as most of my devices use 802.11G. There has been no increase in speed over my Linksys router due to that reason, and the connection drop outs are almost similar. Signal strength is also similar to my earlier Linksys 2.4GHz router.

Overall, I recommend this router only if you have a N band capable device that you're intending to use at 5 GHz. Otherwise, you're better off buying a cheaper alternative.

  Affordable Dual N router   November 19, 2008
JP (Chicago area, IL United States)
I purchased this router in order to connect at a faster wireless speed to two Linksys Windows Media Extender devices (required to effectively transfer HD content). Setup was easy, and guides you through either first time installation or conversion from another wireless router. Connectivity is pretty good, though I haven't connected wirelessly to it yet via my laptop; it's stationary at the moment serving as the Windows Media Center connected via ethernet cable.

It's serving it's purpose at the moment and I can view HD content to each of my HD TV's. Network performance metrics indicate only moderate rates, which may step-down resolution to the TV's, but I can't readily tell from viewing.

At this price, it was the best available. They may drop further in the future.
