Amazon.com Robin Williams went through a period in the mid '80s when he looked like he'd turned into the next Richard Pryor: yet another brilliant standup comic neutered by the script mills of the Hollywood studios. Indeed, Williams seems almost like a spectator in this film, reacting to a supporting cast extremely deep in talent doing what they can with the mediocre script by Brian Doyle-Murray and director Harold Ramis. Williams plays a heroic Chicago fireman, who is injured and retires after saving several lives in a fire. He takes his insurance settlement and buys a resort on a poor Caribbean island (the film was shot in Jamaica). He spends the rest of the time playing straight man to a gaggle of guests that includes such SCTV alumni as Rick Moranis, Andrea Gross, Eugene Levy, and Robin Duke, as well as Jimmy Cliff and Peter O'Toole. Occasionally rising to the level of mild amusement, Club Paradise is, disappointingly, little more than a series of hit-and-miss sketches strung together by the feeblest of plots. --Marshall Fine

My husband and I saw this in the theater when it was released 22 years ago; when it was released on VHS, it was one of the first movies we bought; when it came out on DVD (FINALLY!) we bought it and celebrated. This movie is fantastic - classic Robin Williams, classic soundtrack. We quote this one all the time, too. We like to watch this one, and follow it up with Captain Ron for a full night of Caribbean cult classics.
No Man is An Island, Jack January 21, 2008 Jack Baker (LeRoy,IL)
This is possibly the best Robin Williams comedy out there. Highly underrated, this movie boasts a solid performance from Williams before he became the whirlwind ad-libber and ball of energy he's been in his last several movies. He's much more in control here and that's a good thing. The jokes are funnier and not as machine-gun like in their frequency. He gives a wry, smart-alecky performance as Jack Monica, a retired firefighter who buys into a friend's island club, only to find that there are people (big business) who want the property for their own devices. He has to deal with that along with the pitfalls of running the club and dealing with the wackos who have come to vacation there. The supporting cast is excellent, with Rick Moranis and Eugene Levy as a pair of stoner would be lotharios, Brian Doyle-Murray as a sleazy rival hotel owner, Twiggy as the sexy love interest, and Peter O'Toole turns in a fine performance playing the English governor of the island of St. Nicholas. Jimmy Cliff is a comic revelation as Ernest Reed, the owner and chief performer at Club Paradise. His deadpan humor compliments Williams's character perfectly and we also see his angry political side when the developers try to force him to sell his club. He gives an honest, believable performance, the strongest of the movie. He also lends his music to an excellent soundtrack, sadly unavailable on CD, which makes the movie all the more enjoyable. If you're looking for a serious, deep movie, you've come to the wrong place. If you're looking to spend an hour or so with some wacky characters, plus the world's most enormous bag of weed, then Club Paradise is the place for you.
Cheesy but fun December 28, 2007 M. Alvior (clearlake, ca USA)
If you want a fun movie that you don't have to think too hard about, this is the one for you. Robin Williams and a "club" owner is funny, Rich Moranis as a cheesy pick up guy was awesome. Fun, entertainment.

Cold winter blues are over. August 22, 2007 R. MCVAY
This is a classic movie with tons of classic one liners. I think it is looseley based on "Don't stop the Carnival." For you Parrotheads out there you would love this show. "I think those two hairy guys are looking at us MMMMEEEEAAAT! MMMMEEEAAAAT!"" I could watch it over and over if it wasn't for this diarhea.
