It is a very useful gadget for any type of outing. Everyone going on a camping should carry one.

This handy little tool has some good features, but ironically, the compass one is the least useful. It is nice to have a small tool that has an LED light for looking around inside your tent at night. The safety whistle can be more valuable than you think, when distress or animals are in your camping area. The thermometer (temperature sensor) is nice, but who needs to know exactly how cool or hot it is outside when camping? An extra dry storage compartment for matches is truly convenient, however.

The compass is what one should be buying this for. But, it is only useful for general directions as there is no scale for inches or millimeters or a layout for graduations and declinations when using a map and doing true compass and map traveling. It's somewhat clumsy when placed on a map. For the beginner, I would recommend the "Brunton Classic Compass", as it has all the features a true compass needs, without all the frills. However, for true accuracy, I would recommend a "Lensatic" military compass with a site-reading for true accuracy.
