Amazon.com Product Description
In the first 10 minutes out of the package, we gave this little fellow a workout, measuring everything within our sight. And when we double-checked with a good old-fashioned measuring tape, Stanley was right on the mark. Even up to its cap of 50 feet, it was accurate. For distances greater than that, an auto-add feature keeps a running total for you. You can change measuring units from English to metric with the press of a button, and it's all run by a little 9-volt battery. You don't even need the instructions because it's very intuitive. And let's face it, don't we all love anything that comes with a laser pointer? This one doesn't affect the actual measurement, but it shows you exactly where you're aiming the thing. This is a sweet little unit for a nice price, and it beats walking across a room hoping your tape measure won't let go. --Kris Jensen-Van Heste

The Stanley IntelliMeasure Ultrasonic Estimator quickly calculates square footage and room volumes, providing you with estimates accurate to plus or minus 5-percent within a 50-foot range. In just 2 to 6 seconds, a measurement can be attained in either imperial or metric graduations and is displayed on an easy-to-read LED screen. This ultrasonic measurer comes with a safe, easy-to-aim red laser pointer for accuracy; measurements can be taken from either the top or the bottom of the case and a convenient memory storage and recall option is included. This product is powered by a 9-volt battery and features a low-battery indicator and automatic shut-off. It is backed by a limited lifetime warranty.

It DOES measure from top or bottom   September 5, 2005

The review below is wrong---the Intellimeasure DOES allow you to measure from either the top or bottom of the device. You just press the MODE button to select the mode you want; I don't know why the other reviewer couldn't figure this out (it's also in the manual).

The device works quite well, the only issue I have is that it breaks easily if you drop it.

  Faulty Design Won't Measure Wall-to-Wall   December 9, 2004

Have you ever thought - "I wish I could talk to the person who designed this thing - what was he/she thinking?" I measure a lot of rooms in existing buildings and I was looking for something to help speed the process (besides depending on the standard tape measure). Imagine trying to measure a simple room with a rectangular floor plan - and all you want to do is measure the interior wall-to-wall distance. The IntelliMeasure won't be a lot of help since the design does not allow you to measure from one flat plane to another directly. The laser beam measures from a line on the molded body of the device - so you cannot place the device up against a surface (ie, a wall) and measure directly to an opposing surface (ie, the opposite wall in a room). You have to add 5" to each measurement to account for the dimension of the IntelliMeasure's body. Useless. And, to compound the problem, the mini-manual is of no help. (Stanley - if you are listening - add a function that automatically adds the dimension of the body so users can measure from the base of the product to the measured point. Or, redesign the body so this becomes practical and obvious.)

Excellent overall for the money   September 14, 2003

I use this to double check or measure area for productivity assessments in cleaning. The add function works well and as far as accuracy, it is great when you have a relatively clear shot at a blunt target. This is a SONIC unit that uses a laser only for targeting. I use a laser rangefinder for long distances. This one is great for room measurements.

If you have reasonable expectations and are applying this for what it is designed, it is the best I have found for the money. Stanley is normally not a brand I look for but in this case, it is much better than I expected.

Not for Professional at all   August 31, 2003

I do not expect it perfect tool at [money]. The reason I bought is for only rough estimate quickly. It has to aim straight 90 degrees against flat objects to get correct distance. It is not easy to hold like that with a free hand. I have owned another kind of brand for many years that does not have laser targeting. I paid [money] at [my local home-improvement store], but I have never used it at job site because of too many mistakes. I thought after many years they had changed a lot in technology. There is no difference at all between now and many years ago. Only I paid more for I could not use. It looks excellent for vacant places at this price. I had a chance to use high tech distance measuring tool from Hilti. That is very easy to use and accurate. But expensive.

Even I do not expect this will be a perfect tool at [money]. The lazer is never still when we try to find out the length from wall to wall. Sometimes it works properly but sometimes the length is wrong or it says Error. It is handy when it works properly but not when it is not working properly. All I can say is that sometimes it's useful and sometimes it's not. Thank you for understanding this.
