Prescribed 300mg Allopurinol for gout, which it seemed to be effective to control. But I ended up with severe joint pain, I was in agony day and night. Doctor thankfully finally realised that I was having a serious side effect of the drug. Now off it and much improved. Gout has not returned as yet.

I have been on Allopurinol for nearly 3 decades 300mg/day though I often skip a day. It has been very effective in stopping gout attacks. I have however noticed over the last few years that if I do not take Allopurinol for a few days, my calf muscles feel quite uncomfortable - like they are tensing. If I take an allopurinol tablet, the feeling goes away and I can sleep. Over the last few months, this calf muscle problem has increased. I cant go a day without taking an allopurinol. and some days I need to take 400 or even 500mg to reduce the calf muscle problem to tolerable levels. I will be seeing my doctor about this problem soon. I don't know if it is allopurinol related but I also noticed that when I did not take A consistently, I did develop pain in places like my knee or shoulder joints. Not gout pain, just a soreness that made using those joints difficult. I am overweight so that is likely a contributing factor.

I have CLL, and have successfully halted it's progress with Pau d'Arco, and other botanicals, so I have a high uric acid level to the point of getting vertigo from crystals forming in my cochlea. The vertigo was intolerable after I stopped taking allopurinol, so I started taking it again, with immediate results getting rid of the vertigo, and haven't had a hint of it again. I haven't heard of this specific use before, so I wanted to share it to help those suffering from the terrible affliction of vertigo.

I have had diahrea since I started this drug. I hate it. Will talk to Dr. to stop this. It is awful, am tired along with the other side effects noted.

If you have chronic gout.. with uric acid levels consistently in the double digits, allopurinol will quickly become your best friend.. well, ok, you can keep the dog. Allopurinol is so effective at lowering uric acid, that you may experience a few gout attacks when you first go on it.. each one becoming progressively milder. Gout is a real bug bear. You get the attack when your uric acid levels rise or fall suddenly in a lower pH (acidic) environment. The best first step is with diet. EAT ALKALIZING FOODS. You can google to find out which ones. I've been on daily 300mg allopurnol for 10 years. In that time, I've had virtually no attacks and uric acid levels in the 5-6 range. Allopurinol will raise your liver enzymes! I know this for a fact. I lowered to 100 mg daily and the ALT went down into high normal, but I got a few mild attacks after about four months, so I went back up to 300 mg and so did the ALT. So, be sure to get bi-annual Liver Panels done.
