When I first started taking this, I thought it was a miracle. I was having bad anxiety and panic attacks that had gotten worse over the years. I had immediate relief that felt like a godsend when i started taking it. After being on 20mg for almost four years, I would say that the side effects are a killer. I feel as though I traded in my anxiety for 3 or 4 other problems. Bad weight gain- maybe 20lbs and a nasty gut that I can't seem to get rid of, low sexual functioning and probably some constipation as well. I am really tired of these side effects and would like to be free from them.

I took this for about a month, and I’m immediately stopping it after the panic attack I’ve been having for 3 days now. I started to have crazy intrusive thoughts and that caused me to spiral. I couldn’t leave my bed, I couldn’t go near my children. I was thinking terrible things that I had never thought before in my life. I do have a history of anxiety and panic attacks but it’s been many years since I had a panic attack like this one. There was no consoling me. I also had pretty bad insomnia and I was more agitated than normal leading up to this panic attack. I wouldn’t wish the feeling on my worst enemy.
drug seems tp work for me. I think it may work for others who have depression.

Left it a week then tried 5mg and exact same thing again except suicidal thoughts worse than before, sitting here and trying to think but can’t guess it’s the couch again. The cure is worse than the disease, seeing psych tomorrow to tell him to jam this one. Also have HIV and some of those meds have been bad but this takes the cake except you can’t eat it too after. Has left me shattered and not functioning at all. Don’t take this stuff, it’ll fry you.
I take this drug for both chronic depression and anxiety and it is pretty great! it helps me get out of bed in the morning, cry less, speak more in class and move at a normal speed. Just be prepared for a significant libido hit (fine for me as an asexual but you should note) and increased hunger and thirst is common too I think.
Lexapro was probably working for my anxiety. However, if you enjoy an active sex life and are prescribed Lexapro, then you might as well forget about it.
I am a 55 year old female. I have suffered very mild anxiety for several years up until seven months ago when i went through a family tragedy. I ended up having a nervous breakdown which saw me had panic attacks, dry retching, tremors, shaking and shocking internal chest pains. I started in Escitalopram 5mg for 5 days then 10mg. I had just about every side effect imaginable- heart would race, shakes, restlessness, no sleep, no appetite. The first two weeks were so much worse but I stuck with it. After about four weeks I started to feel a bit better. It has now been 7 months and I have never felt better. My care factor about small silly things is zilch and big problems that would normally have made me super anxious don’t affect me anymore. I just deal with the problem and move on. Stick with it and give it a good go. Slow and steady wins the race. I am still on 10mg and am loving life once again.

I started taking lexapro 3 months ago on 10mg because I would constantly get extremely depressed from one day to another. My depression was so bad that I would literally have days where I was in such a good mood and then the next day I would be just so depressed and crying . I experienced very bad random ups and downs. When I started taking this medicine my doctor warned me that it would make me very sleepy, she also mentioned I would lose sexual drive and I could not drink alcohol as much anymore. This was all true , I started these meds and was EXTREMELY sleepy at first I had night sweats and slept so deep for about 3 hours only and then I’d wake up wide awake. I lost my sexual drive but it did take the depression away. HOWEVER, not only did it take the depression away , it also took all of my emotions away leaving me like a careless person. I literally did NOT feel a thing at all. No pain no happiness no nothing . It is such a bad feeling not being able to feel emotion at all , no type of sympathy etc.

I have been taking 20mg for 6 years. It has helped me with anxiety, PTSD and severe depression. It has allowed me to live a normal life. I've been combining it with psychotherapy. Cons: nightly sweating (sometimes extreme), trouble waking up, reduced sex drive/ability to orgasm (as a women).

Taking Lexapro for one day is all I needed to know about this drug. I felt really sick all day with no appetite. If that’s how i felt the first day I don’t even want to know what the next two weeks are going to feel like. I just trashed it. I’ll figure out another way to cope.

Within 30 minutes of taking I’m vomiting even in a full stomach. My doctor recommended me to take half for returning to 10mg end I still can’t handle it at all.

I felt sick the first day: nausea, short of breath, fatigue, dizziness. I had to leave school sick. By the 4th & 5th day, (in addition to the nausea and dizziness) my eyes were bugging out of my head, my pupils were extremely dilated, and my eyes and arms were twitching. My mood felt completely numb. I felt nothing at all. I could not focus or think straight. I was freezing and pouring sweat with a 100°F fever. Basically caused a mild case of serotonin toxicity for me. I don’t do well with SSRIs, I should mention. Just hoped this one with the lower side effect profile would be more helpful... or at least less harmful.
