Carbetapentane is a cough suppressant. It affects the signals in the brain that trigger cough reflex.

Pseudoephedrine is a decongestant that shrinks blood vessels in the nasal passages. Dilated blood vessels can cause nasal congestion (stuffy nose).

Carbetapentane and pseudoephedrine is a combination medicine used to treat cough, stuffy nose, and sinus congestion caused by allergies, sinus infections, or the common cold.

This medication will not treat a cough that is caused by smoking, asthma, or emphysema.

Carbetapentane and pseudoephedrine may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide.

What is the most important information I should know aboutRespi-TANN(Oral)?

Do not use this medicine if you have used an MAO inhibitor in the past 14 days.A dangerous drug interaction could occur. MAO inhibitors include isocarboxazid, linezolid, methylene blue injection, phenelzine, rasagiline, selegiline, tranylcypromine, and others.

  • severe coronary artery disease.

To make sure carbetapentane and pseudoephedrine is safe for you, tell your doctor if you have:

  • pheochromocytoma (tumor of the adrenal gland);
  • a seizure disorder;
  • glaucoma;
  • diabetes; or

FDA pregnancy category C. It is not known whether carbetapentane and pseudoephedrine will harm an unborn baby. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant while using this medication.

Carbetapentane and pseudoephedrine can pass into breast milk and may harm a nursing baby. Tell your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby.

Thechewable tabletform of this medicine may contain phenylalanine. Talk to your doctor before using this form of carbetapentane and pseudoephedrine if you have phenylketonuria (PKU).

Side Effects

What are the side effects ofRespi-TANN(Oral)?

Get emergency medical help if you have any of thesesigns of an allergic reaction:hives; difficult breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.

Stop using carbetapentane and pseudoephedrine and call your doctor at once if you have:

  • pounding heartbeats or fluttering in your chest;
  • pale skin, weakness;
  • severe dizziness, vision problems, hallucinations;
  • painful or difficult urination; or
  • a light-headed feeling, like you might pass out.

Common side effects may include:

  • nausea, loss of appetite;
  • headache, dizziness, drowsiness;
  • constipation, diarrhea; or
  • feeling nervous or excited.

If you need surgery, tell the surgeon or doctor ahead of time if you have taken this medicine within the past few days.

Call your doctor if your symptoms do not improve after 7 days of treatment, or if you have a fever with a headache, cough, or skin rash.

Store at room temperature away from moisture and heat.

Since this medicine is taken when needed, you may not be on a dosing schedule. If you are taking the medication regularly, take the missed dose as soon as you remember. Skip the missed dose if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose.Do nottake extra medicine to make up the missed dose.
