If you’ve ever experiencedshortness of breath, painfulwheezingor coughing, or chest tightness, there’s a chance you could have asthma.

“Asthma is one of the most common chronic diseases, affecting around 6 to 8 percent of the population,” saysMitchell Grayson, MD, an allergist and immunologist in Columbus, Ohio.

Typically, you’ll be diagnosed with asthma by a primary care provider or in the emergency room after a reaction. “The definite diagnosis is made by showing that there’s a reversibility of the airway obstruction that people have,” Dr. Grayson says. “We diagnose people with asthma if they show a 12 percent improvement in breathing after taking an inhaler, or if they experience a reduction of airflow from a very low dosage of methacholine, a drug that causes the airway tubes to constrict.”

The main treatment for asthma is with an inhaler. Inhalers are broken down into two main types: a metered dose inhaler (MDI) or a dry powder inhaler (DPI).

MDIs, also known as relievers, are the L-shaped aerosol canisters used to treat acute breathing problems by delivering a short burst of medicine, like abeta agonist. DPIs are controllers that treat inflammation by delivering medication (inhaledcorticosteroids) when users breathe in. They’re usually taken daily.
