Product Description
This Chess Teacher is a learning set for the beginner. Have you always wanted to learn how to play chess' The Chess Teacher easily shows how many spaces each piece can move and in which directions. No reading required. Complete with deluxe 15" x 15" chess board. For two players.

Editorial Review
In an age that seems convinced high tech is always better, it's nice to see such an intelligently low-tech approach to teaching the world's greatest board game. This is simply a standard plastic Staunton-style chess set--with one big difference. Each piece is marked with its name, its value, and the directions in which it can legally move when moving or taking. The large (2-inch), hollow pieces are lightweight and feel pretty flimsy, but in fact they're sturdy and their extra-wide bases give them the stability that small, clumsy fingers need. A folding board and instructions are included with the set. The instructions, unfortunately, are weak; they're best used as an aid to memory by someone who has already had the game explained. --Richard Farr

My son is six and caught on very quick to the game of chess. Makes it very easy to learn and remember which pieces can go where. Love it.

Good for learning but not for long   December 19, 2007

The set like this I learned on as a kid was a much more sturdy set with solid pieces. This was great for when my son was 2 1/2 and learning, because it is very visual. The board is cheap and with the pieces being a bit oversized they will not sit well on some other cheap chess boards. The board only lasted for about six months of play before it was trashed. I would recommend for the beginner. We moved to a trounament quality chess board when my son turned 5 and joined his school's chess team. Those sets run about the same price as this one. We still have the this set for friends and family who don't know chess well, to use when they play him.

Who cares if it's "flimsy" or doesn't give the values? It's for beginners - 6,7,8 year olds. I think it's harder to remember how they move than what they're worth. And if the set only lasts for a year or two, so what? By then they know how to play and they buy a "real" set. Sheesh.

My daughter-in-law was a 4th grade teacher. She has two masters and needs 5 credits for her doctorate but she now has my three grandchildren The oldest was six 10/28/06 and the mother asked me to buy this product for her. I am sure they are very happy with it.

My 5 year old son is learning to play chess, so this set seemed perfect for him. All pieces are marked on the bottom with their proper movement (not their value as stated in an earlier review). This will be useful for a period of time.

But I must mention that the pieces and board are very, very flimsy. For a game as enduring as chess, the life of this set will be fleeting. The board can only hold up on a perfectly flat surface. The pieces feel very cheap because they are hollow. The queen chipped her base within the first couple of uses.

As soon as we can move on to a more substantial set, we will get rid of this one.
