The Fountain is a layered, often beautiful score from composer Clint Mansell. The disc seamlessly moves from ambient drones to plaintive piano music to slowly percolating minimalist stuff to hugely swelling strings. Mansell, who's collaborated with director Aronofsky before, uses almost anything from the minor-key sonic palette available to him, with the exception of the mopey yuppie-folk and instantly dated electronica so often thrown into films. Mansell's own group, the superlative Kronos Quartet, is joined by Scottish noise act Mogwai. The use of such an arty, detuned guitar rock band as Mogwai in a big time movie soundtrack might seem weird, though of course Explosions in the Sky's work on Friday Night Lights was a harbinger. It's too soon to tell if this is an outright classic of soundtrack music in the realm of Goblin's Suspiria, John Carpenter's Escape from New York, or Popol Vuh's Aguirre. But it is definitely a subtle, melancholic work you'll want to revisit often. --Mike McGonigal

Album Description
For the soundtrack to writer-director Darren Aronofsky's long-awaited sci-fi epic, The Fountain, Kronos Quartet reunites with composer Clint Mansell. The had previously collaborated on the haunting score for Aronofsky's Requiem For A Dream.

Music for the Soundtrack Bignners   June 23, 2008

The Fountain was described to me as a piece of artwork filled with perceptions and beautiful art direction. However, no one even told me the exceptional music that played an instrumental role in creating a feel for this movie that made me tingle.
Clint Mansell is truly an amazing composer and a master in his field, I have enjoyed many of his work in many movies such as smoking aces and requiem of a dream! You have to give it all a listen.

  Fantastic soundtrack for a so-so movie   May 19, 2008

I must say I found the film to be a bit pretentious and overwrought. It had some amazing visuals, and some interesting story points along with a nice twist here and there. However, I found it to meander a bit too much and it seemed to be artsy just for the sake of being artsy... hopefully that makes some sort of sense. I enjoyed Pi and Requiem much more than this one.

However, with that being said, I can say that this soundtrack is absolutely astounding. The unique melancholy of the music sets a mood like none other I can think of. This will be in my iPod playlist right next the The Last Temptation of Christ soundtrack, and the OST for Last of the Mohicans. I can't remember the last time I said that a sountrack took me on a journey, but that is what I feel like as I listen to it while typing this. Kudos to Clint Mansell in this wonderful achievement.

Mansell was brought into this world to score this film...   May 15, 2008

Clint Mansell apparently "gets" Darren Aronofsky's indie films. This score matches the dreamlike imagery to absolute perfection. It is as if Mansell was BORN TO SCORE THIS FILM. There is simply nothing more I can say except to say thank you Mr. Mansell and the Kronos folks....and where the h*ll can I find the Wind Chill score?

All I have to say is "wow"! You must watch the movie, to appreciate this sountrack. Most people, didn't get the movie...but that's due to ignorance....

There's no doubt. This is the best score of 2006 and Clint Mansell is a new musical genius.
