I finally found Coach Dobbs!   September 6, 2008
Alan A. Maynard
I finally found Coach Dobbs! I've been trying to remember for 15 years where I had seen a way-above average compilation of "SNL brand" material one foggy prime-time night years ago. The memory of Randy Quaid as Coach Dobbs getting beaned by a baseball over and over again, or Joe Flaherty as Abe Lincoln returning from a trip to the near future in his time machine (Catherine O'Hara as Mary Todd Lincoln:"What about me? Was I there?" Abe:"Yeah...you go nuts." Mary:"Damn!I knew it!!")have made me smile all these years and there lots of other reasons to want this unknown
but VERY funny compilation of skits made to support the then-popular SNL recurring character of Toonces the Cat. Made primarily by Christopher Guest and Robert Smigel, if you like snarky, tongue-in-cheek comic creativity, this half-hour tape is for you--AND ME!

Liked the Friends Part More Than The Toonces Part   April 22, 2008
Jonathan Schultz (Las Cruces, NM, USA)
Not that the Toonces sketches weren't funny too but IMO the best stuff on here is what some people might consider "filler".

The so-called "filler" stuff has lots and lots of great comic actors and writers on board and it's all pretty top notch.

The "Zactu And Mondo From Way, Way Beyond-O" sketches featuring George Wendt from "Cheers" and Kevin McDonald from the Kids In The Hall as two bumbling aliens attempting to make contact with the people of Earth (and failing miserably) are pretty funny, but to me, the best sketch of all on there is Dave Thomas (of SCTV fame) in "Abraham Lincoln And His Time Machine"---this sketch had me crying I was laughing so hard.

This tape is truly a rare gem for comedy nerds everywhere and DEAR VIACOM OR NBC OR WHOEVER HOLDS THE RIGHTS TO THIS STUFF: I WOULD PAY CASH FOR A DVD OF THIS COMPILATION.

"Toonces and Friends" Short On Toonces   February 26, 2008

Toonces and Friends is a big disappointment. I wandered why it wasn't available on DVD, it's because the entire program is only 24 minutes in length. That wouldn't be an issue if those 24 minutes were filled with Toonces sketches from SNL. However, Toonces is in only 3 of the 11 sketches on the videotape... what a waste! The remaining 8 sketches are comprised of material from the late 80's when SNL wasn't very funny.

Toonces was in 10 Saturday Night Live episodes between May 20, 1989 - April 17. The videotape doesn't include 3 of the best Toonces sketches: Toonces & Martians w/ John Goodman, Driving Miss Daisy w/ Quincy Jones, and the funniest of all... Urban Toonces w/ Debra Winger. Don't buy this VHS unless you can get it for $5 or less.

He Can Drive, Just Not Very Well...   March 7, 2007
Robert O. Sims (Deep South Texas (Texico, really))
Quite possibly the funniest video you'll ever watch. Yes, it's a little too heavy on the "and Friends" part (the "Fugitive Couple" skit is not worth watching, and most of the others are there as filler), but the Toonces portions are laugh-out-loud funny. There is one exception to that... the "Scruffy The Rat" skit is every bit as funny as the "Toonces" skits. I actually bought this video just for Scruffy, and then fell in love with Toonces too.
Toonces is without a doubt the funniest imaginary character to grace the screen at SNL. Do you have a friend who never laughs, or who you perhaps secretly suspect of being made of concrete... well fear no more, even they will laugh when they watch Toonces!
The tape quality isn't the best (it is in SP speed, but it was duplicated on a high-speed unit at the factory and that didn't help the picture quality), but it isn't bad.
If this ever comes out on DVD, I'll buy copies of that to use as gifts.
In the meantime, I'm very happy with my VHS version. Toonces rocks!

Hillarious Video - also to clear up a few things...   November 23, 2004
L. W. Maxwell (CARMEN SANDIAGO)
Not ALL of the sketches on this video were from Saturday Night Live. In fact, if I remember this correctly, this was actually a prime-time special which aired sometime in the early 90s. I can at least remember watching it on TV back then. These are all sketches by Jack Handy, and its actually mostly original material; maybe a couple or more of the Toonces sketches were actually from Saturday Night Live. So basically this video is a showcase of Jack Handy's humor.

This video IS available in SP mode, I know because I own it. I don't know if this particular version of it listed on amazon.com is in SP or EP mode.

Any comedy fan (not necessarly SNL fans) should check this out, There are some fantastic people in this from outside of SNL's cast: Bob Odenkirk (Mr. Show - was a writer for SNL at the time), Joe Flaherty (SCTV), Dave Foley (Kids in the Hall, Newsradio), and Kevin McDonald (Kids in the Hall) all appear in sketches on this video.
